80% of African American Women Overweight or Obese??
Obesity has reached near epidemic proportions in the United States. The prevalence of obesity is high among African Americans, particularly African American women. The risk of diabetes is significantly related to obesity. The risks of morbidity and mortality associated with diabetes poses serious problems for the African American community.
Nearly 80% of black women are overweight or obese, increasing the risk not only of heart disease but also a host of other conditions, including stroke, gallbladder disease, arthritis, and some cancers. If you’re overweight, even a small weight loss will help lower your risk. At the very least, try not to gain more weight. Lasting weight loss needs a change of lifestyle — adopt a healthy, lower-calorie eating plan and get regular physical activity. Aim to lose no more than 1/2 to 2 pounds per week. Ask your doctor what your weight should be.

It’s funny how a …
It’s funny how a good intellectual blog can turn into a racist rant! Anyway, obesity is definitely a problem in america. In our community, its an epidemic. We need to excersise and eat better. We can say there are no healthy food stores in the ‘hood, but we know all black people don’t live in the hood! We have to take responsibility for ourselves.

It’s weird, because …
It’s weird, because two centuries ago, It was never like this. People actually had a normal weight and you’d see morbidly obesity rarely. Once the rave of process foods and carbonated sodas came along, obesity shot up even more. It’s sad, because all I see in the black communities I go to are: convenience stores filled with junkfood, ABC liquor and fast-food places.

i think the stats are correct…i live in trinidad and tobago (part of the Caribbean) and the majority of young ppl of all races are overweight…not so much morbidly obese thoug…but i am watchin the new generation comin up after me…young children 8, 9, 10 years old are walking around with their somachs hanging over their pants….an i blame it solely on their partents for allowing them at that young age to become so obviously overweight…weight mangagement has to be taught from small

i think it’s more like 60-75%…I also think there should be a different BMI chart for black women because our bone densities are significantly different from those of other races…so sometimes we’re considered to be overweight even if we look fairly slim.

Not only are BW big …
Not only are BW big or obese, but so is every other american. If you take a look at other courntries, we seem to be the most unhealthy. It’s really sad because people don’t think about their health until it near kills them, and then they suddenly want to rush and shed pounds as if it only took a day to put all that weight on…seriously?
February 3rd, 2010 at 1:58 pm
@sassygalady BMI’s …
@sassygalady BMI’s should not apply to bw. BW are more muscluar and big boned. Beyonce would be considered overweight, but every man in the world would get with her. I am 6′4″ tall and broad shouldered. I am supposed to be 210, I would look like a crack head at that weight. I am at 250 now and i could lose 25 pounds. But the BMI is a BS system.
