Dr Louise Ryan – Alumni Award for Distinguished Service 2009

Louise Ryan completed an Honours Degree in Statistics in 1978.
She was Professor of Biostatistics and Chair of the Department
of Biostatistics at Harvards School of Public Health before she
returned to Australia this year to take on the role of Chief of CSIRO
Mathematical and Information Sciences.
Since receiving a PhD from Harvard University in 1983, Louise
has become well-established as one of the worlds eminent
biostatisticians. Her research has addressed such health problems as toxicity in drinking
water in developing countries; the incidence of hospital admissions of heart attack
patients; and the design and analysis of clinical trials for cancer treatments.
Widely published, Louise is a member of the Institute of Medicine, a Fellow of the
American Statistical Association and a Fellow of the International Statistics Institute.
She has been on the advisory boards of several US government agencies, including
the National Toxicology Program and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Louise is an active proponent of diversity in higher education and has received a number
of prestigious awards for her contributions to public health.
