Explore the consequences of a meat (animal based) diet. Are we really designed to be omnivores OR does a plant based diet suit us best?
MEDICAL STATISTICS
* The third highest cause of deaths in the US is what is termed “iatrogenic”, which means “induced in a patient by a physician’s activity, manner, or therapy.” This accounts for an estimated 225,000 deaths per annum which is about 10% of total deaths from all causes including old age. Of these, 12,000 deaths result from unnecessary surgery. The highest cause of deaths in the US is heart disease (725,000) and the 2nd highest is cancer (549,000). Both of these were almost unheard of at the beginning of the twentieth century.
* 180,000 deaths a year occur due to adverse reactions to prescription medications. By comparison, general accidents in life account for 98,000 per annum. This includes 42,000 from car accidents, 120 from airline crashes**, 90 from being struck by lightning** and 5 from Anthrax (in 2001). 15,500 die from murders and 20,000 from flu or its complications.
**averaged over 2-3 decades
Causes of Death Further Breakdown
1. Tobacco 435,000
2. Poor diet and physical inactivity 400,000
3. Alcohol consumption 85,000
4. Infectious agents (e.g., influenza and pneumonia) 75,000
5. Toxic agents (e.g., pollutants and asbestos) 55,000
6. Motor vehicle accidents 43,000
7. Firearms 29,000
8. Sexual behavior 20,000
9. Illicit use of drugs 17,000
* Despite all the media hype about how good the US medical system is and how we’re winning the war against cancer, these statistics tell a very different story:
According to the 2001 World Health Organization report, “World Health Report Health Systems: Improving Performance”, the U.S. ranks 37th out of 191 countries. A commentary published in the July 26, 2000 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association notes that in a comparison of the top 13 industrial countries based on 16 health indicators, the U.S. ranked on average 12th. The countries included in the study were, in order from the top-ranked (best health care) to the lowest-ranked, as follows: Japan, Sweden, Canada, France, Australia, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Belgium, the U.S., and Germany. Of the 13 countries compared, only Germany ranked lower overall than the U.S. In fact, the U.S. ranked dead last for three indicators. These were low-birth-weight percentages, neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall, and years of potential life lost. These rankings do not paint a picture of a country that has the world’s best health care.
Is it true that we’re winning the war against cancer like we’re asked to believe, after the massive research funding backed by the government?
From the U.S. government’s own raw statistical abstracts we find the real story:
Mortality from Cancer in the U.S.
year — deaths/ 100,000
1967— 157.2
1970— 162.9
1982— 187.3
1987— 198.2
1988— 198.4
1989— 201.0
1990— 203.2
1991— 204.1
1992— 204.1
1992 is the last year for which data is currently available from Vital Statistics. There is nothing to indicate that there should be any downturn between 1992 and the present. In fact, independent analysis by the CA Journal for Cancer Clinicians, Jan 97, put the 1993 death rate at 220 per 100,000. A 40% increase in cancer deaths per capita in the last 4 decades is hardly “winning the war against cancer.”
* An estimated 2 million people a year (11% of those admitted) catch infections in hospitals that they didn’t have when they were admitted and approximately 90,000 of them die from these infections. An approximate list in order of likelihood is: urinary tract infections (34%), surgical site infections (17%), respiratory infections especially pneumonia (13%), blood infections/bacteraemia (14%), skin (especially burns), gastrointestinal tract infections, and central nervous system infections.
* About 2,216,000 annual hospitalizations result in adverse drug reactions and these account for 106,000 deaths annually.
* As Dr. Robert S. Mendelsohn demonstrates in his book “Confessions of a Medical Heretic”, when hospitals or doctors go on strike, the death rate goes down and when they go back to work, the death rates rise again.
* Its estimated, that 80% of the population will end up with a tumor, cancer, disease or some type of physical problems or pain. This means approximately 4 out of 5 people are on the highway to some type of physical tragedy.
* Side effects of commonly used over the counter pain relievers include gastric ulcers, bleeding stomachs, hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths last year.

@DianeDi Yep I …
@DianeDi Yep I agree, I just stay as natural as possible. The only bad thing about my diet is that the meat I eat is most definitely not that great of quality. I really think if someone is going to eat meat, its important to eat grass fed products. Animals are alot healthier when they eat what they are supposed to eat.

@cdn Speaking of …
@cdn Speaking of coconuts- I agree they have been given a bad rap over the years. I recall a time where we were “informed” we must avoid coconut and palm oil at all costs. People would search out products just to avoid them, & what did we end up with- as you mentioned earlier, trans fat, butter substitutes like margarine, which is about one molecule away from becoming plastic.
Perhaps that is why there are still a few 85 and 90 yr olds around that ate dairy & meat. It was all natural then.

Eating these days …
Eating these days is not what I call real food. I am heartbroken to see what parents are providing for their children. To me, it’s a form of child abuse, albeit through ignorance and persistent marketing, targeting the busy parents and sometimes the low wage earners. Many that struggle find they can provide a filling meal at a drive through cheaper than buying quality organic vegetables and fruits. This is not right and people must get back to basic wholesome food.

@cdnp4p So in …
@cdnp4p So in addition to no refined carbs, no sugar or avoiding as much as possible, what type of meats are you suggesting in particular? I realize NOT factory farmed and organic natural foods for each species, but what are you suggesting is good and in what quantities? In the early 1900’s people were healthy but only consumed animals or their products a few times per week in small quantities. Look at the size of a slab of meat today vs. 75 years ago. We are a society of gluttons.

@DianeDi well thats …
@DianeDi well thats true. That I agree with. THe biggest key for me is the lack of sugar I eat. Thats been the biggest difference.
I eat a nice balance between all fats. I never, NEVER consume trans fats though.

@cdnp4p Isn’t the …
@cdnp4p Isn’t the key to carbs to be “unrefined”. Refined carbs and sugar are much the same as the body doesn’t know how to handle “refined” products. Sugar (fructose) from whole fruit is different than sugar in fruit juice. The human body is amazing and when we eat closest to the natural form found in nature, the body responds.
Have you seen “The Hazards of Sugar” it’s on Mercola site

Your diet that is high in fat, what fat are you referring to?
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@DianeDi Again …
@DianeDi Again thats false. Once again, you need to read up on human biology. We dont pack on weight because of fat. In fact, we arent fat because of fat consumption. We are fat because of the ridiculous amount of carbs, sugars etc that we eat that SPIKE OUR INSULIN LEVELS. Insulin stores fat. It accumulates fat. If we keep insulin in check, we dont store fat. Its really that simple. My diet is VERY HIGH in fat but i’ve eliminated sugars, im going low carb and ive LOST WEIGHT.

@cdnp4p One thing I …
@cdnp4p One thing I do understand is you don’t want to answer any questions I have. What is that doctor pulling out of this guy’s arteries…. is it broccoli, leafy greens, fruit? I doubt it.
We definitely need fat in our diet, it’s necessary to absorb vitamins and nutrients. A little olive oil on a salad is far better than no oil or fat free. We don’t need much fat, but “enough” fat. Our body stores fat, it’s not a nutrient – too much can pack on weight.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
And thats the point …
And thats the point. Natives didnt eat all the crap that you mentioned. They ate nuts, vegetables, animals, got adequate exercise, vitamin D exposure etc. That is why they were so healthy. Its comical to see you downgrade animal products. Meat is absolutely essential.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@DianeDi yes, I am …
@DianeDi yes, I am well aware of whats killing millions of people each year. And I have touched on meat quality before. Grassfed meat is the best bet as its not factory farmed etc. the western diet is killing millions because of HFCS, refined grains/flour, lack of exercise not to mention all the other preservatives/chemicals added into our food products. but saturated fats are not a killer. If it was, why are coconuts such a health food? You know thats its 93% saturated fat?
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@DianeDi ughhh. You …
@DianeDi ughhh. You dont understand. Theres a reason why it got there in the first place. And it has nothing to do with eating high cholesterol and high fat diets.
Are you also one of those people who think eating fat makes you FAT?
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@cdnp4p I curious …
@cdnp4p I curious to know, what exactly you think this doctor is pulling out of this guy’s arteries?
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@cdnp4p Then show …
@cdnp4p Then show me a list of centenarians on the high saturated fat “Atkins” type diet.
Incidentally, look around, the Western diet is killing millions of people each year, thanks to saturated fats, animal products galore, sugar and refined grains/flour. Natives also did not consume aspartame, MSG, high fructose corn syrup and high qualities of sugar – chemicals / preserves in their food either. They ate as close to nature as possible… today, it is quite the opposite.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@DianeDi If …
@DianeDi If saturated fat and cholesterol contributed to all the conditions you mentioned, my god tons of people eating their native diets would be dying of those mentioned diseases. In fact, many of their diets consist of between 60-80% fat, most of it coming from saturated fat. And their diets were very high in cholesterol and yet not only were they big, strong, athletic but they had well developed bone and facial features and no incidence of the diseases that plague us today.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@DianeDi Do you …
@DianeDi Do you know why blood cholesterol levels get too high? It has absolutely nothing to do with eating too much cholesterol. Your body produces 80% of its cholesterol. Only 20% comes from the diet.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@cdn Saturated fat …
@cdn Saturated fat does contribute significantly to heart disease, arteriosclerosis and strokes. As for cholesterol, YES, it is absolutely essential and is manufactured by the liver. When blood cholesterol levels get too high, it can clog arteries and increase our risk for coronary heart disease. This is normally the case when we consume animal products. Our body is able to regulate itself but additional intake accumulates in the arteries.
February 27th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
@DianeDi Saturated …
@DianeDi Saturated fat and cholesterol dont cause heart disease. In fact, cholesterol is absolutely essential to the human body.

Well as the world …
Well as the world famous cardiologist Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn said “do you want to be shot or hung”? All animal “meat”/protein is one in the same. It’s cholesterol & saturated fat & it will eventually cause major illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, cancer & diabetes to name a few. Please watch MAD COWBOY
