Food That Kills – Part 3 of 6

Explore the consequences of a meat (animal based) diet. Are we really designed to be omnivores OR does a plant based diet suit us best?

MEDICAL STATISTICS
* The third highest cause of deaths in the US is what is termed “iatrogenic”, which means “induced in a patient by a physician’s activity, manner, or therapy.” This accounts for an estimated 225,000 deaths per annum which is about 10% of total deaths from all causes including old age. Of these, 12,000 deaths result from unnecessary surgery. The highest cause of deaths in the US is heart disease (725,000) and the 2nd highest is cancer (549,000). Both of these were almost unheard of at the beginning of the twentieth century.

* 180,000 deaths a year occur due to adverse reactions to prescription medications. By comparison, general accidents in life account for 98,000 per annum. This includes 42,000 from car accidents, 120 from airline crashes**, 90 from being struck by lightning** and 5 from Anthrax (in 2001). 15,500 die from murders and 20,000 from flu or its complications.

**averaged over 2-3 decades

Causes of Death Further Breakdown
1. Tobacco 435,000
2. Poor diet and physical inactivity 400,000
3. Alcohol consumption 85,000
4. Infectious agents (e.g., influenza and pneumonia) 75,000
5. Toxic agents (e.g., pollutants and asbestos) 55,000
6. Motor vehicle accidents 43,000
7. Firearms 29,000
8. Sexual behavior 20,000
9. Illicit use of drugs 17,000
* Despite all the media hype about how good the US medical system is and how we’re winning the war against cancer, these statistics tell a very different story:
According to the 2001 World Health Organization report, “World Health Report Health Systems: Improving Performance”, the U.S. ranks 37th out of 191 countries. A commentary published in the July 26, 2000 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association notes that in a comparison of the top 13 industrial countries based on 16 health indicators, the U.S. ranked on average 12th. The countries included in the study were, in order from the top-ranked (best health care) to the lowest-ranked, as follows: Japan, Sweden, Canada, France, Australia, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Belgium, the U.S., and Germany. Of the 13 countries compared, only Germany ranked lower overall than the U.S. In fact, the U.S. ranked dead last for three indicators. These were low-birth-weight percentages, neonatal mortality and infant mortality overall, and years of potential life lost. These rankings do not paint a picture of a country that has the world’s best health care.
Is it true that we’re winning the war against cancer like we’re asked to believe, after the massive research funding backed by the government?
From the U.S. government’s own raw statistical abstracts we find the real story:
Mortality from Cancer in the U.S.
year — deaths/ 100,000
1967— 157.2
1970— 162.9
1982— 187.3
1987— 198.2
1988— 198.4
1989— 201.0
1990— 203.2
1991— 204.1
1992— 204.1
1992 is the last year for which data is currently available from Vital Statistics. There is nothing to indicate that there should be any downturn between 1992 and the present. In fact, independent analysis by the CA Journal for Cancer Clinicians, Jan 97, put the 1993 death rate at 220 per 100,000. A 40% increase in cancer deaths per capita in the last 4 decades is hardly “winning the war against cancer.”

* An estimated 2 million people a year (11% of those admitted) catch infections in hospitals that they didn’t have when they were admitted and approximately 90,000 of them die from these infections. An approximate list in order of likelihood is: urinary tract infections (34%), surgical site infections (17%), respiratory infections especially pneumonia (13%), blood infections/bacteraemia (14%), skin (especially burns), gastrointestinal tract infections, and central nervous system infections.
* About 2,216,000 annual hospitalizations result in adverse drug reactions and these account for 106,000 deaths annually.

* As Dr. Robert S. Mendelsohn demonstrates in his book “Confessions of a Medical Heretic”, when hospitals or doctors go on strike, the death rate goes down and when they go back to work, the death rates rise again.

* Its estimated, that 80% of the population will end up with a tumor, cancer, disease or some type of physical problems or pain. This means approximately 4 out of 5 people are on the highway to some type of physical tragedy.
* Side effects of commonly used over the counter pain relievers include gastric ulcers, bleeding stomachs, hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths last year.

    @cdnp4p That is …
    @cdnp4p That is absolutely NOT true. Humans do not need meat. We are eating far too much protein… protein is causing too much sickness. It’s acidic and draws calcium from the bones to balance this. Why do you think there is so much osteoporosis, cancer and various illness. The body cannot function properly when it is always trying to alkaline itself due to high intakes of animal products.
    Eat as close to nature as possible. We don’t need meat or dairy at all. Worst thing for us!

  2. cdnp4p Says:

    @DianeDi Absolutely …
    @DianeDi Absolutely not. Bleached white flour is awful. I just stick to a primal/Paleo type diet. Lots of green leafy vegetables, healthy fats, good protein sources. and Its not a healthy balanced diet if you dont eat meat.

  3. DianeDi Says:

    @cdnp4p So your …
    @cdnp4p So your only come back is stating that “whole grains” are of no benefit. Are you suggesting bleached white flour like the rest of the corporations that “push” sickness is preferred? Unless people have an allergy to these grains, there is no reason to not eat them whole rather than processed. This is part of a healthy balanced diet.

  4. cdnp4p Says:

    @DianeDi Thats …
    @DianeDi Thats false. Incredibly false. Have you taken a look at the literature? Not to mention, this “doctor” doesnt even know how cholestrol and fat clog up arteries and why people get fat. Its absolutely embarassing people take him seriously. High fat, moderate protein and low carb has been proven to be the best weight loss method…and the healthiest. And yet, you guys are most likely consuming a ton of carbohydrates through whole grains etc which are terrible. They arent health foods.

  5. cdnp4p Says:

    @DianeDi Look up …
    @DianeDi Look up vegetarian centenarians. If its such an incredible diet, how come very few if any live past 100?

  6. cdnp4p Says:

    @DianeDi there are …
    @DianeDi there are very little health benefits in eating whole grains. In fact, it can actually be quite detrimental to your health.

    @DianeDi thank you …
    @DianeDi thank you very much i kind of read about what you said but you have confirmed it to be true thanks =). yeah sucks why the government wants to kill us well thank you very much =)

  8. DianeDi Says:

    I have read that …
    I have read that coconut oil is the best for frying due to it’s ability to endure a higher heat. Most oils can give off carcinogens when heated, but coconut is the one and only that does not. If you are trying to gain weight because you are losing rapidly, you may want to get checked out for “hyperthyroidism”. If this gland is too active you will never gain weight.

    You are one of the lucky few that wants to gain weight. Most struggle each and everyday with too much weight. Keep me posted.

  9. DianeDi Says:

    @fidefreestyle On …
    @fidefreestyle On a plant based diet, the options are great. It’s nice to be able to eat healthy, natural foods, without clogging the arteries.

    If you enjoy nuts, cashews have loads of nutrients and will provide many calories, as well as macadamia nuts. All nuts are great but those two are extremely high in calories. Also, avocados… try dicing in salads or make guacamole. Use exclusivity olive oil for salads it’s healthy and high in calories. Of course don’t over do this.

    @DianeDi thanks i …
    @DianeDi thanks i am really considering it. Have to do some real good research since, i am trying to gain weight any main foods i should eat to reach my goal?

    thanks again DianeDi

    @DianeDi All im …
    @DianeDi All im saying is i’ve reviewed primitive diets from throughout the world and their diets often comprised of 60-80% fats, 15-20% protein and the rest carbs and they were incredibly healthy, much healthier, bigger, stronger than that of vegetarian populations. Just research Weston Price. By no means am I advocating high protein diets. I think the majority of our diets should be comprised of fats from the good variety. And im also not saying vegetarian diets cant be healthy.

  12. DianeDi Says:

    @fenixz I do …
    @fenixz I do believe in many of Dr. Mercola’s beliefs, but when it comes to animal protein (eggs & dairy in particular), I personally disagree. You are entitled to your opinion and I, likewise. We can all achieve a healthy balance of omega 3, iron, protein, calcium and various vitamins and nutrients through plant / whole grain based diets. We do not need to eat animals, most of whom are raised and exploited for profit and are sick. We have been lied to about our daily requirements.

  13. DianeDi Says:

    cdnp4p What he is …
    cdnp4p What he is discussing is how 2 reverse heart disease. If beef or other fat is solid at room temperature it will form a solid @ body temperature. Meat was eaten throughout history but nowhere near current levels. The lucky ones had a roast once a week, today, it’s protein overload. Protein inhibits calcium absorption & it is so acidic in extracts calcium stores from the bone to alkaline the blood eliminating through the urine. Some good info here “A Delicate Balance”

  14. cdnp4p Says:

    @DianeDi Humans are …
    @DianeDi Humans are omnivores by nature. We’ve been eating meat throughout our entire history. You can argue that the quality of meat we consume today for the most part is terrible. You’d have a point which is why i’d recommend grass fed animal products. But you cant tell me that plant based diets are healthier because their is simply a shortage of evidence supporting that. This “doctor” needs to brush up on his facts. Because the info he spews is questionable to say the least.

  15. DianeDi Says:

    @fidefreestyle …
    @fidefreestyle Thanks ! There is no doubt in my mind that a plant based diet is the secret to a long and healthy life. We have been deceived about calcium and protein from animal products. I ate all this years ago – did a lot of research and came to the very real conclusion that this stuff will definitely kill me.
    Dairy is the first thing that should be eliminated from our diets…. watch my main feature video (with links), plus some interesting vids under “About Me” under my profile.

    All animal products will KILL YOU!!! Animal products are the cause of all diseases known to man!!! Everyone needs to adopt a 100% plant based diet. You will get everything you need from fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes. Make this switch as soon as possible to make yourself and your loved ones extremely healthy. You will have a ton of energy!!! Things to stay away from include whey, casein, lactose and albumin. Also, limit consumption of refined sugars and carbohydrates.

    As I see you are dealing with statistical research: I have put one of the most comprehensive link lists for hundreds of thousands of statistical sources and indicators on my blog: Statistics Reference List. And what I find most fascinating is how data can be visualised nowadays with the graphical computing power of modern PCs, as in many of the dozens of examples in these Data Visualisation References. If you miss anything that I might be able to find for you or if you yourself want to share a resource, please leave a comment.
